Mathilda Edge, soprano, is originally from Chandlerville, Illinois. She has won recognition in a number of international, national, and regional competitions in recent years. In 2016 alone she placed in the both the Washington International Competition for Voice and the National Association of Teachers of Singing Artist Award Competition. She was lauded by the judges in both competitions for her "flawless technical control and vocal freedom." Earlier in the year she won the Bel Canto Chorus’ Regional Artist Competition in Milwaukee, WI, with which she debuted as the soprano soloist in Mendelssohn’s Elijahin March of 2017. Ms. Edge also took first place in Bloomington, Indiana’s chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letter Vocal Competition.
Ms. Edge has won the Indiana District's Metropolitan Opera National Council for the past three years. She placed second place at the Central Region MONC auditions in November of 2015, and third in the following year. Early in 2017, Ms. Edge was a semifinalist for Houston Grand Opera's Eleanor McCollum Competition, and in May took third place in the Cooper-Bing Competition with Opera Columbus.
While maintaining an active competition schedule, Ms. Edge also maintains an active performing career in concert, oratorio, recital, and operatic work. She has sung in concert with numerous choirs such as the The City Choir of Washington & New Dominion Chorale, both in Washington, DC, the Bel Canto Chorus in Milwaukee, WI, as well as with choirs at Indiana University, Indiana State University, Illinois College, and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.
Ms. Edge has performed as Fiordiligi in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, First Lady in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Sandman in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, Romilda in Händel’s Xerxes, The Milliner in Stauss’s Der Rosenkavalier, and as the title role of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly in which she was praised for her "deeply affecting" performance.
In the Summer of 2017, Ms. Edge performed with the Merola Opera Program, participating in the Schwabacher Summer Concert in which she sang an extended scene as the title role in Massenet's Thaïs. Her performance was compared to Ms. Beverly Sills with San Francisco Classical Voice saying that Mathilda “portrayed Thaïs in a performance ready for the whole opera (which made even the divine Beverly Sills fold in one of her final San Francisco appearances, in 1977).” Later in the summer she made her public debut on the San Francisco Opera stage in the Merola Grand Finale singing a selection from Verdi’s I vespri Siciliani. Most recently, in the Summer of 2018, Ms. Edge covered the title role of Ariadne in Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos as an Apprentice Artist with Santa Fe Opera.
Mathilda is currently a member of The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan ensemble at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. She opened the 2019-20 season there as Berta in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia for which she was hailed as a “vocal tour de force” by the Chicago Tribune. Ms. Edge can be seen later in the season as Gerhilde in Die Walküre in 3 series of Wagner’s Ring Cycle.
